Altruistic behavior in a representative dictator experiment

چکیده

We conduct a representative dictator game in which students and random members of the community chose both what charity to support and how much to donate to the charity. We find systematic differences between the choices of students and community members. Community members are much more likely to write in their own charity, community members donate significantly more ($17), on average, and community members are much more likely (32%) to donate the entire $100 endowment. Based on this evidence, it does not appear that student behavior is very representative in the context of the charitable donations and the dictator game.

Measuring Altruistic Behavior in Surveys: The All-or-Nothing Dictator Game

A field study of altruistic behaviour is presented using a modification of the dictator game in a large random sample survey in the Netherlands (n=1,964). In line with laboratory experiments, only 5.7% donated money. In line with other survey research on giving, generosity increased with age, education, income, trust, and prosocial value orientation.

The Prevalence and Price Sensitivity of Altruism Two Field Experiments with Dictator Games Among a Random Sample of the Dutch Population

This paper presents two field studies of altruistic behavior among random samples of the Dutch population using modified versions of the dictator game. In the ordinary dictator game, university students devide an endowment received at the beginning of the experiment between themselves and an ‘anonymous other’. In study 1, a large, representative sample of the Dutch population (n=1,964), played ...

Empathy promotes altruistic behavior in economic interactions

What are the determinants of altruism? While economists assume that altruism is mainly driven by fairness norms, social psychologists consider empathy to be a key motivator for altruistic behavior. To unite these two theories, we conducted an experiment in which we compared behavior in a standard economic game that assesses altruism (the so-called Dictator Game) with a Dictator Game in which pa...

Does Competition Affect Giving?∗

Charities often devise fund-raising strategies that exploit natural human competitiveness in combination with the desire for public recognition. In a controlled laboratory experiment based on a sequential “dictator game”, we find that subjects tend to give m...

Giving to whom? Altruism in different types of relationships

Experiments show that people give money away to other people, even when contributions are anonymous. These findings contradict the common economic assumption that people maximize their own payoffs. Here we take the approach that human altruism is shaped by a set of cognitive models for distinct types of relationships. Specifically, we apply relational models theory which distinguishes between c...
